Volunteer Centre Sandwell AGM and Mini Conference Summary

28th November 2014

“Looking to the future, seizing opportunities.”

On Friday 28th November, Volunteer Centre Sandwell held its Annual General Meeting and Mini Conference at the Sandwell Council House Chambers in Oldbury. Over 40 voluntary and community organisations were in attendance.   The meeting was a success, and gave the public the chance to find out more about the work being done by VCS in the last 12 months to promote and enhance volunteering for the wider Sandwell community, also to look to the future and seize new opportunities.

Peter Smith, Chairman of Volunteer Centre Sandwell, made mention of the concept of equal opportunities and diversity in volunteering, and reinforced the message of volunteers being valued by organisations, also advocating the good practice of settling volunteer’s travel and  reasonable out of  pocket expenses.

Jean Taylor, Chief Executive Officer highlighted the exceptional time of change happening for all local organisations. However she added that even in these hard times and continual social cutbacks, people in Sandwell are embracing volunteering, bringing inspiration, commitment, passion and energy in order to give something back to the community.

Feedback from the evaluations received from the day proved to be nothing short of positive as 100% of the delegates felt that overall the event met their expectations. The Mini Conference in particular featured a very thought provoking and inspiring presentation delivered by Keynote speaker and executive coach Rose Vakis who closed her speech by challenging the audience to    “Do something today that your future will thank you for”. This was then followed by a thought sharing session where delegates representing organisations had the opportunity to contribute their ideas as to what changes need to be made and how they would like to see the voluntary sector in the next 3 years.
